"And when I'm with you.. I wonder.. if it's like being with a brother." Naruto, chapter 228

relationship

even without words, I still can understand you

So hence - after having taken a closer look at the two characters and their rivalry, one probably would agree with me that Sasuke and Naruto do seem like polar opposites.

But what does one expect - at first glance, one only notices that one of the them is the village’s most despised child, the prankster, the hyper knucklehead ninja with the worst grades. The other one though gets portrayed as the cool and well-collected A-class boy genius, who gets all the attention without actually giving a fig about it. Seriously, could they be any more different (not to forget the spikey blond hair and the azure eyes compared to the darkhaired raven)?

Soon however, it is clear that deep down, they aren't that far apart. Rather, they are incredibly similar. I'd even dare to say, they are the same.

Both know the same pain of loneliness, of soltitude, of being left alone – both shared the same fears and nightmares. Both boys have a messed-up childhood, that lies beyond our imagination – and thus, they already had to experience what the worst kind of pain means. Being so different from the surface, and yet, deep down being so similar- somehow, it's not only ironic, but also.. tragic.

But due to that, this is exactly how their first bond came into being. They might not have talked as children, but I'm pretty sure there also weren't any words needed to understand the other one.

And yet, there is still one big crux in their relationship, one of the keypoints of the series - the major difference between the two.

One of them seeked solitude, while the other one tried to flee from it. One chose to become a loner by himself, while the other one fought against it. Simply put, one had chosen hatred as his path of getting stronger – and the other one love.

Within Sasuke, only his hatred grw and he saw his purpose in life only to defeat his brother. He didn't need any relationships, and dutifully tried not let his feelings gain the upper hand. Naruto in contrast, didn't hold any grudge against the villagers who treated him so awefully - rather he chose to protect them, to prove they are wrong - to prove his existence.

But the bond the two of them had formed when they were young, still held them together. Maybe due to the reason, originally, Sasuke was probably the one who showed Naruto the right way, despite himself. After all, Sasuke was the one who subconsciously inspired him, who kept him going, who prodded him to work even harder.

..and this all, again, despite the fact Sasuke himself wasn't moving anymore. He was stuck - in a nightmare void of hope - in his past.

Sasuke kept isolating himself from everyone around him, building up some sort of .. barrier. Well, one could say he was almost successful. Almost, because in the end, he was defenseless against a light – a light that spent so much comfort and care, a light that shone so brightly that it even illuminated the darkest corners of Sasuke’s mind – a light that he himself had originally made shine in the first place.

A light, that was Naruto.

As soon as they were forced on a team, Naruto, with just being himself, slowly but surely started to heal the shivers of Sasuke's mind. Of course, also Sakura, and Kakashi-sensei were part of the reason Sasuke finally learnt to live again.

Still, Naruto didn't make Sasuke forget his past- rather, he showed him how to bear it. Sadly though, at that point of time, Naruto hadn't seen the scars beneath, and Sasuke got pulled back into the quagmire of loneliness, and decided to follow his initial path of getting stronger again.

But I strongly believe that if Naruto could save Sasuke already once, why not also for a 2nd time?

Neither of them is complete without the other one - that's for sure. Naruto just wouldn’t be the one he is today without Sasuke and vice-versa. After all, it’s thanks to their bond, both of them got pulled out of their own quagmire of loneliness and abandonment. Even if Sasuke might be gone for now, Naruto won't lose sight of him. He will keep chasing and tracking him, for a lifetime and longer, if needed.

..and one day, he will succeed. After all, I'm sure Sasuke still has a spark of light within him, no matter how dark his surroundings may be. Naruto is the one who won't let this spark go out.

That is basically what I think of their relationship - it's profound, dedicated, strong - but also twisting, intricated and incredibly complex. But most of all it is human- and beautiful.
